Just when you think a week can’t get any better, you stumble across an all women’s adventure film festival: Dirty Girls.
The collection of films transported us from our seats and into multiple journeys across the globe. From a 21-day solo trek across the Sierra Nevada to diving into coldest depths of frozen Nordic lakes, the film festival follows women from all walks of life living out their day to day lives or achieving their dreams.
Born out of a desire to champion women’s feats, the compilation eloquently gives women an opportunity to share their achievements and place it on a platform that often doesn’t get enough spotlight.
“Historically many women have told the story of their adventure through books rather than film. Now, slowly, the tide is changing. More women are getting sponsorship, and have the budget to make films. There are more females behind the camera as well which means the tone and pace of adventure film story telling is also evolving.” – Jemima Robinson, Festival Director.
Watching women truly embrace what they love either by themselves or side-by-side, hearing about what drives them and witnessing goals being achieved invokes an overwhelming sense of elevation. Often their reflections identify with connection to an authentic moment where one strays away from technology and society. The lessons learned during each epic journey resounds one another; freedom, a deeper connection and in turn, a stronger awareness of self.
One woman in particular stood out, Britain’s first mountain guide 91-year-old Gwen Moffat. The bohemian free spirit exudes from Gwen as she reflects on her youth; a youth unparalleled to her peers in the 1940’s. Before we had every piece of apparatus and numerous brands producing climbing specific get-up, Gwen would climb rock faces in anything from a bikini to shorts and T, barefoot.
The nine film selection is damn impressive and unlike any film festival we have been to. The comradery of women kicking ass despite not being taken seriously enough in the arena of extreme adventure, is a step into the future we support.
“We want to celebrate that women don't have to look perfect, celebrate that women can just get outside and not have to worry about how they look, rather focus on having fun, having an adventure and staying safe. Something guy adventurers get to do every day of the week.”
